The Singer Not The Song
2013 selected for the Salon des Refuses, The Black Swan Art Prize
oil on canvas 120cm x120cm Brooke Wilkie, Singer/ Songwriter
Brooke is the lead singer in renowned Perth band “Bears and Dolls”. www.facebook.com/bearsanddolls
Brooke writes songs with themes based on personality disorders and psychological states. In this painting I have depicted Brooke’s expressive quality as a singer, an explosion of intense feeling and eccentricity.
Multiple layers of paint have been formed and reformed in a time consuming process. I have chipped, scratched, dug, and torn paint in order to create a tenacious material form that resonates and harmonises with the psychological content.

Brooke Wilkie, songwriter and psychology student merges her passions into one; writing songs of personality disorders and psychological states. Brooke is the lead singer in renowned Perth band “Bears and Dolls”. www.facebook.com/bearsanddolls

A background in stand-up comedy allows Brooke to view and express the light in addition to the unrelenting darkness that rests hand in hand with such psychological disorders and traits of character.

In this painting I have depicted Brooke’s examination of the human condition. Within this psychological space, her analytical frame of mind penetrates through the painting, as interrupted states of being are revealed in paint form.

Heidi Mulder. Hair.Embodied within a dynamic mindscape the woman plays with psychological and elemental forces. The opposing forces of gravity and weightlessness expand, contract and distort reality. Air, water, fire and psychological expressions of energy are investigated. Sensitive, complex use of paint, sometimes harsh and cracked, sometimes soft and supple, are symbolic of the myriad complexities of the woman’s personality. The subject, however, demonstrates control over her environment and exudes a calm and assertive power that resonates throughout the image.

Heidi Mulder Mondrian Nude 2 Oil on Canvas heidimulder.com
Mondrian Nude 2
Highly Commended - Pinjarrah Art Award
The aerial view shows the artist looking at herself and has an almost ‘astral’ quality. The lines that intersect through the figure represent that we are not solid beings and that we are indeed spirit inhabiting a physical body. Piet Mondrian discussed the vertical line as being symbolic of the masculine principle, and the horizontal line as the feminine. So perhaps the aim of this painting is to describe the interaction of the feminine and masculine or even the interaction of physical and spiritual existence.
